We firmly believe that assessment is an integral
part of teaching, identifying what pupils have learned
and understood, in order to guide future learning.
The
process is on-going, using a variety of informal
and formal methods to monitor and assess each
child's progress. These include our own tests,
those produced by assessment agencies, especially
the 'National Foundation for Educational Research'
(NFER), and the national tests (SATS), which take
place at the end of Year 2 and Year 6. Interim
SATs style tests are also used during Key Stage
2. Each half term teachers set mid-term assessments
in numeracy, literacy and science which form the
child's assessment portfolio. This is shared with
parents on parent's evenings.
Spelling,
tables tests and mental maths for older pupils
are held weekly, and we encourage the children
to share the results of these with you. The results
of other internal tests will be summarised for
you when you meet your child's teacher at our
Parent Evenings.
The
results of the Year 2 and Year 6 national tests
(SATS) are given to parents as soon as possible
each year. In addition, when we have ten or more
children in the relevant year group, our results
are published in the national school performance
tables. Level 2, or above, is the expected level
for 7 year olds, and Level 4, or above, for 11
year olds. The scale is designed so that most
pupils will move up one level every two years.
The
staff and governors also use SATS and interim
SATS results to set performance targets for the
school.
